Vintage Muscle Car Test: Motor Trend Wrings Out the 383 Plymouth Road Runner in 1968
In the Dec. 1967 issue, Motor Trend published a comparison test of several of the supercar models that were all-new or substantially revised for the 1968 model year: GTO, Charger, GS 400, Torino, Chevelle, Road Runner, 4-4-2, and Coronet R/T. Of the bunch, the MT editors called the Road Runner “the simplest, starkest, most brazenly pure non-compromising super car in history.” A simplicity that was welcome, they said, as “super cars of the past found it impossible to doff the wraps of inherited comfort and remove their fatty layers to live again. But each year the cry of enthusiasts for something basic became stronger, until it could no longer be ignored. Plymouth was the first to react, and they did it with a forceful product, and a sense of humor.”
