2017 BMW i8 Review: Bimmer’s Plug-In Pioneer Holds the Line

The BMW i8 paired a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with an electric motor, a carbon-fiber passenger cell, and swan doors, then asked $143,400 for the combination. It hit 60 mph in about 4.2 seconds and returned an EPA rating of 76 MPGe. Almost nothing else on the market in 2017 was attempting the same thing. Most halo cars pick a side. They commit fully to spectacle, in which case nobody expects them to be usable, or they commit to usability, in which case nobody photographs them. One car from the middle of the last decade refused to choose, and the compromise it struck was strange enough that the industry took years to catch up to what it was actually demonstrating. Underneath the theatrical doors and the impossible-looking silhouette sits an engineering trade that sounds like a punchline on paper: a tiny turbocharged three-cylinder engine, related in concept to what BMW put in its smallest hatchbacks, mounted in a carbon-fiber structure normally reserved for cars costing twice as much.

A Three-Cylinder Doing a Sports Car’s Job

The powertrain reads like two separate cars stitched together, and functionally that is precisely what it is. A 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder drives the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic. A separate electric motor drives the front wheels through its own two-speed automatic, fed by a lithium-ion battery pack of roughly 7.1 kWh. Combined output lands at 357 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, enough to reach 60 mph in about 4.2 seconds. A three-cylinder engine producing supercar acceleration numbers is not something anyone would have predicted from a 2009 vantage point, and the electric motor’s instant torque is what makes it possible.

All-Wheel Drive Without a Driveshaft

Because propulsion is split between the axles with no mechanical connection between them, the i8 delivers all-wheel drive without a transfer case, a center differential, or a driveshaft running the length of the car. Engineers call this a through-the-road hybrid layout, and its advantages are structural as much as dynamic. Removing the driveline tunnel’s mechanical contents frees packaging space, saves weight, and allows the battery to occupy the car’s centerline where it lowers the center of gravity. The tradeoff is complexity in the control software, which has to blend two power sources with entirely different response characteristics into something that feels like one car.

The Carbon Tub Underneath the Show

The structure is the part that most deserved attention and got the least. The i8’s passenger cell is carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic mounted to an aluminum chassis carrying the powertrain and suspension, an architecture BMW developed alongside the i3 and manufactured at scale rather than by hand-laying each tub. Carbon construction at that time was largely confined to cars priced far above the i8, and using it to offset the weight of a battery pack rather than to chase lap times was a genuinely unusual application of an expensive material. It is also why a hybrid with a battery weighs about what it does.

Seventy-Six MPGe and Fifteen Electric Miles

The efficiency numbers are what made the car properly strange for its class. On electricity alone the i8 could cover roughly fifteen miles before the gasoline engine woke up, which is enough to cover a great many short errands without burning anything. Combined, it earned an EPA rating of 76 MPGe, and running on gasoline alone the three-cylinder still returned around 28 mpg. A car capable of embarrassing family sedans at the pump while accelerating like a proper sports car had almost no direct comparison in 2017, and reviewers spent a lot of column inches trying to decide which category to judge it in.

What $143,400 Actually Bought

All of that technology carried a base price around $143,400, which invited an obvious objection: for that money, several conventional sports cars would deliver considerably more outright speed. The objection was fair and also somewhat beside the point. Nobody buying an i8 was cross-shopping purely on quarter-mile times. They were buying a carbon-tubbed, plug-in hybrid, all-wheel-drive coupe that looked like a concept car and could commute on electricity, and the list of alternatives offering that specific combination was empty. Halo cars exist to demonstrate what a company can do, and this one demonstrated something no competitor had.

The Doors, and What They Cost in Practicality

The doors deserve their own accounting. The upward-swinging design is the single feature everyone remembers, and it delivers genuine drama every time the car is parked anywhere with people around. It also demands vertical clearance most parking structures do not guarantee, complicates entry and exit in tight spaces, and adds cost and mass to the structure. The rear seats behind them are essentially decorative, suitable for bags rather than adults. These are the tradeoffs that come with a shape that started life on a show stand and reached production far more intact than such shapes usually do.

From Auto Show Concept to Showroom Floor

That show stand was the 2009 Vision EfficientDynamics concept, and the gap between it and the production car is remarkably small by industry standards. What the i8 argued was that electrification and performance were not opposed, that a small displacement engine could serve a serious sports car when paired with electric torque, and that carbon fiber could be manufactured at meaningful volume rather than one tub at a time.

What the i8 Got Right About the Future

Every one of those arguments is now settled consensus, which is the highest compliment a concept car can eventually earn. Hybrid systems appear in flagship supercars specifically for the torque fill they provide off the line, exactly as the i8 demonstrated. Downsized turbocharged engines paired with electric assistance have become the standard high-performance recipe rather than an experiment anyone needs defending. Electrically driven front axles paired with combustion-driven rear axles now show up across the industry as the simplest route to all-wheel drive in a performance car. The i8 was mocked in 2014 for having a three-cylinder engine, and a decade later the mockery reads as a failure of imagination rather than a fair criticism.

The Used Proposition Today

On the used market, the i8 has become one of the more interesting propositions in modern performance cars, having depreciated substantially from that original figure while remaining visually unmistakable. The considerations are the usual ones for early complex hybrids: battery health, the availability of technicians familiar with the drivetrain, and parts pricing for carbon structural components after any incident.
