Welcome to Muscle Car Fan. Before you hand over a pile of cash for a classic muscle car, spend the next few minutes with me. I am going through four of the most popular cars on the market and exactly what to check on each one before you buy. Rust, paperwork, and fakes. Four cars, four inspections, and one rule: documentation first, price last.
#4: 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1
First on the list is the 1969 Mustang Mach 1. It is one of the easiest classics to find, and that is the problem, because easy to find also means easy to find a bad one. Get under it with a flashlight.
#3: 1969 Dodge Charger R/T
Second is the 1969 Dodge Charger R/T. Prices have climbed so high that clones and fakes are common, so start with the paperwork. Find the fender tag, a metal plate on the driver side inner fender, and the VIN on the dash.

#2: 1968 Pontiac GTO
Third is the 1968 Pontiac GTO, and the secret weapon is paperwork. Pontiac Historic Services keeps original factory records and can document how your car was built, for a fee. Ask the seller whether they have that documentation.
#1: 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28
Fourth is the 1970 Camaro Z/28, a favorite target for clones. On a GM car, look for the cowl tag on the firewall, which lists paint, trim, and build date, and compare it to the VIN. The real Z/28 came with the 350 cubic inch LT-1 engine, so check that the engine and the stamped numbers on the block match the car.
That is the inspection list for four classic muscle cars. For every car, the order is the same: paperwork first, rust second, price third. If a seller cannot show you proof, walk away. Tell me in the comments which car you are hunting for, and follow Muscle Car Fan for more buyer guides.
