Every muscle car legend started with a person who had a stubborn idea. If you are new to the world of muscle cars, here is where to start: four people, four cars, and the stories that made American muscle. We count down from four to one. The last one is a car dealer who refused to follow the rules.

#4: 1965 Ford Mustang and Lee Iacocca

Number four is Lee Iacocca and the Ford Mustang. Iacocca was a Ford executive who believed young Americans wanted a stylish, affordable, sporty car. His team built the Mustang on a simple Falcon platform to keep costs low, and Ford introduced it in April 1964.

#3: 1964 Pontiac GTO and John DeLorean

Number three is John DeLorean and the Pontiac GTO. General Motors had a rule that limited engine size in its midsize cars, but DeLorean and his team found a loophole. They offered the big 389 cubic inch V8 as an option package on the Tempest in 1964, and they borrowed the letters GTO from Ferrari, which stood for Gran Turismo Omologato.

#2: 1965 Shelby GT350 and Carroll Shelby

Number two is Carroll Shelby, the Texan who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959 as a driver and then turned to building cars. Shelby had a health problem with his heart that ended his racing career, so he moved to the other side of the business. He put a Ford V8 into a small British roadster and created the Shelby Cobra.

#1: 1969 Yenko Super Camaro and Don Yenko

And number one is Don Yenko, a Chevrolet dealer from Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, who raced cars on weekends and sold them during the week. Chevrolet did not want to put its biggest engine into the Camaro, so Yenko found a way around the rules using a special ordering system. His dealership took delivery of Camaros with the powerful 427 cubic inch V8, and then added stripes and badges to create the Yenko Super Camaro.

That is the story of four people who changed American muscle, and the cars that carry their names. New to muscle cars? You are in the right place. Tell me in the comments which story is your favorite, and follow Muscle Car Fan to keep learning.
