Dodge built roughly 29,800 Challengers for 1971. Just 71 of them left the factory with the 426 Hemi, and 1971 was the last year the street Hemi was offered at all. Out of roughly 29,800 Dodge Challengers built for the 1971 model year, almost none of them left the factory with the engine every collector now wants. The number is small enough that it sounds like a typo when you first hear it, and small enough that a genuine example turning up at a show still draws a crowd of people checking casting numbers. This particular R/T goes a step further by running the dual-quad version, which narrows an already narrow field. And because 1971 was the last year Dodge would ever put this engine in a street car, a car like this stops being a cool old Challenger and becomes something closer to a full stop at the end of a sentence.
Seventy-One Cars Out of Twenty-Seven Thousand
The headline figure is 71. Seventy-one Challengers were built with the 426 Hemi in 1971, against roughly 29,800 Challengers total — a rate under three-tenths of one percent. That is not the sort of scarcity that comes from a limited-edition marketing exercise. It is the sort that comes from an option so expensive, and so punishing on insurance premiums, that ordinary buyers walked past it. The Hemi package added a substantial amount to the sticker price of a car that was already the priciest Challenger on the lot, and by 1971 the insurance industry had built surcharge tables specifically designed to make high-horsepower cars unaffordable for the young men who wanted them.

What the Dual-Quad Setup Actually Does
The dual-quad arrangement is the detail that gets Mopar people talking. The 426 Street Hemi ran two Carter four-barrel carburetors mounted inline on a specially cast intake manifold, the rear one handling normal driving and the front one opening progressively as the throttle went down. It is a fundamentally different approach from the single four-barrel setups on the 440 and 383, and it is a large part of why the engine breathes the way it does at high rpm. It is also a large part of why it needs regular attention to stay in tune, which we will come back to.
The Numbers Behind the Reputation
Factory ratings put the Hemi at 425 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 490 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, and a functional Shaker hood scoop punched straight through the sheet metal, bolted to the air cleaner so it trembled with the engine at idle. Period road tests recorded roughly 5.2 seconds to 60 mph and 13.7 seconds through the quarter mile. Those numbers were genuinely extraordinary in 1971 and remain respectable now, but almost everyone who has ever worked on the engine believes the 425 figure was conservative. Chrysler had no incentive to advertise a bigger number when insurance underwriters were reading the same brochures.
A Race Engine Sold to the Public
The engine’s DNA explains everything about it. The 426 was designed for racing before it was ever offered to the public, taking its name from the hemispherical combustion chambers that let it use very large valves and flow enormous amounts of air. It made its reputation by sweeping the top three finishing positions at the 1964 Daytona 500, and only afterward was a detuned street version made available so Chrysler could satisfy homologation requirements and sell some cars off the back of the publicity. Why 1971 Was the End of the Line
1971 was the end because everything was pushing the same direction at once. Emissions regulations were tightening year over year, compression ratios were coming down across the industry in anticipation of unleaded fuel, insurance surcharges had made big-inch cars punitive to own, and buyer taste was already shifting toward smaller and cheaper. Dodge simply stopped building the 426 for street applications after that model year. The E-body Challenger itself would survive only through 1974, and by then the performance versions were a memory.
The Restyle That Marked the Final R/T
The 1971 restyle gives the final R/T its own look. Dodge fitted a revised split grille, changed the taillight treatment, and gave R/T models a dual-scoop hood along with a distinctive side tape stripe that fanned rearward across the front fender and door. It is the easiest year to identify at a glance from the front, and because R/T production fell sharply that season, the combination of the 1971 face and R/T trim is far less common than the 1970 cars that dominate the Challenger’s popular image.
Living With a Hemi Was Never Easy
What is rarely mentioned alongside the performance figures is how demanding the engine was to own. The Street Hemi used solid lifters, which meant valve lash needed periodic adjustment rather than being maintained automatically. Two carburetors needed synchronizing. The engine ran best when worked hard and fouled plugs when it was not. Dealers of the era frequently found themselves servicing Hemi cars owned by people who mostly drove to work and back, and plenty of those cars were traded on something easier within a couple of years.
The Short Life of the E-Body Challenger
It is worth remembering how brief the Challenger’s first run actually was. The E-body arrived for 1970, shared its basic architecture with the Plymouth Barracuda, and was gone after 1974. That is five model years total, and the genuinely high-performance versions occupied only the first two of them. By 1972 the R/T designation had disappeared from the Challenger entirely, the big-blocks were gone, and the car soldiered on with small-block engines and a Rallye trim package before being replaced by a rebadged Mitsubishi that shared nothing but the name. Detroit rarely abandons a nameplate that quickly, and the compressed timeline is why so much of the Challenger’s reputation rests on cars built in a window barely two years wide.
The Reason Values Went Where They Went
Put all of that together and the value trajectory stops being surprising. A car that was expensive when new, punishing to insure, difficult to maintain and built in tiny numbers was always going to have a low survival rate, and the ones that did survive frequently lost their original engines along the way. Documentation is therefore the whole game here: a fender tag, a broadcast sheet and matching casting numbers separate a genuine 71-car build from a very well executed tribute, and the price difference between the two is measured in multiples rather than percentages.
