New “Fate of the Furious” Trailer Features Tons of Widebody Dodge Muscle Cars

When the first Fate of the Furious trailer dropped in December 2016, it was not the plot that got muscle car fans talking, it was a few fast cuts of a widebody Dodge Challenger nobody had officially seen before. The timing lined up suspiciously well with a certain Hellcat-based reveal just weeks later. What was Dodge really showing off, and did the movie beat the company to its own announcement?

The eighth edition of the Fast & Furious series is falling upon us and so are a few action-packed trailers. The most recent trailer for The Fate of the Furious features some interesting ridesâ€”and enough action to be parceled out across every Die Hard and Lethal Weapon combined.
In the one-minute trailer, we see a fair amount of unique ridesâ€”most notably Dom Torettoâ€™s widebody ’70s Dodge Charger and a widebody Dodge Challenger, possibly the new Dodge Charger Demon. Sadly, both cars’ exhaust note and engine are muffled by god-awful music and tough-guy explosions.

Movie trailers do not usually send shockwaves through the muscle car community, but the first look at Fate of the Furious in December 2016 did exactly that. Buried in a handful of fast cuts was a heavily modified Dodge Challenger with flared fenders, a widened front and rear track, and a Hellcat-inspired face wearing a contrasting matte black hood. Sharp-eyed fans immediately suspected they were looking at something that had not even been officially unveiled yet. The timing made the theory almost impossible to dismiss.

A Widebody Reveal Before the Reveal

The Challenger seen in the trailer beat its real-world counterpart to the punch. The production version of that widebody Dodge, widely believed to be an early look at the Challenger SRT Demon, would not officially debut until the 2017 New York International Auto Show on April 12, just two days before Fate of the Furious hit theaters. That kind of timing does not happen by accident, and it turned a simple trailer drop into a genuine reveal for one of Dodge’s most anticipated performance cars.

More Than One Mopar in the Mix

The Challenger was not the only Dodge muscle drawing attention in the footage. Fans also spotted a modified early-generation Charger, long associated with Vin Diesel’s character Dom Toretto, alongside a widebody build that many pegged as a heavily reworked Plymouth GTX. The film ultimately paired those American muscle cars against an eclectic international cast that included a Lamborghini Murcielago, a Mercedes-AMG GT, and a Subaru Impreza WRX STI, giving Mopar fans a reason to cheer even in a lineup dominated by exotics.
