Why Oldsmobile Bet a Personal Luxury Car on Front-Wheel Drive
The Toronado started as a 1962 rendering by Oldsmobile stylist David North, a compact sports coupe nicknamed the Flame Red Car that was never meant for production. Weeks after the painting was finished, Oldsmobile learned it would be allowed to build a personal luxury car to compete with the Buick Riviera and Ford Thunderbird for 1966, and North’s design got the nod. For cost reasons the car had to share the E-body shell with the redesigned 1966 Riviera, which made it considerably bigger than North had imagined, but the swooping fastback, the flared wheel arches and the slotted wheels survived the translation.
Underneath, the car was the product of a front-wheel-drive program that engineer John Beltz had been shepherding since 1958. Oldsmobile called the drivetrain the Unitized Power Package. The 425 Super Rocket V8, good for 385 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque, sat in a conventional north-south position, while the Turbo-Hydramatic 425 transmission was split in two: the torque converter stayed behind the engine, but the planetary gearset moved to the left side of the block and was driven by a two-inch-wide Hy-Vo silent chain. GM claimed the package racked up 1.5 million test miles during development, and the design proved so durable it was later used almost unchanged in the 1970s GMC motorhome. Firestone even developed a dedicated tire for the car, the TFD, with a stiffer sidewall to cope with the front-drive loads.
Packaging all of that up front forced more firsts. The Toronado became the first GM passenger car in the United States to use torsion bars in its front suspension, because coil springs simply would not fit. Out back was a beam axle on single leaf springs with a pair of shock absorbers on each side, one vertical and one horizontal. The brakes were 11-inch drums at all four corners, which most period testers agreed was the car’s real weak point, and front discs did not arrive as an option until 1967. Oldsmobile priced the coupe at about $4,585, built 40,963 of them for the 1966 model year, and collected Motor Trend’s Car of the Year award along with a third-place finish in the European Car of the Year voting, a rare honor for an American car at the time. The Quirks That Make Owners Keep Finding New Things
Start inside. Because there is no driveshaft running to the rear axle, the Toronado has a completely flat floor, front and rear, which is why nearly every buyer took the standard Strato bench seat and enjoyed honest three-across seating without anyone straddling a tunnel. In front of the driver sits the car’s most famous oddity, a slot-machine speedometer: instead of a needle sweeping across a dial, a black drum printed with white numerals rotates behind a fixed horizontal pointer, so the numbers appear to roll past as speed climbs. The steering wheel that frames it carries a double-delta horn ring that looks like nothing else GM sold. The doors are enormous to give rear passengers a fighting chance, and Oldsmobile added a second set of latch handles at the back edge of each door so those rear passengers could let themselves out without reaching around the front seats.
Outside, the hidden headlights rotate up out of the nose, and the intake manifold under the hood was cast with a depressed shape purely so the low hood line would clear it. None of this was gimmickry for its own sake. A car weighing roughly 4,500 pounds with about 60 percent of that mass on the front tires should have handled like a barge, yet period testers found it more poised than other full-size Americans and nearly impossible to push into oversteer. Published acceleration tests ranged from roughly 7.5 seconds to 9.5 seconds to 60 mph depending on who was driving, with a quarter-mile in the mid-16s at more than 90 mph and a top speed around 135 mph. For a personal luxury coupe with an automatic and drum brakes, that was serious pace.
Why the 1966 Is the One Collectors Chase
The first year was also the high-water mark. Sales fell to 22,062 for 1967 even with the arrival of optional front discs, and the design softened year by year until the 1970 model lost the hidden headlights altogether. In 1968 the 425 gave way to the 455, and by 1971 the Toronado had become a much larger, plusher body-on-frame luxury car.
