Gassers ran on pump gas, rode on solid front axles, and pointed at the sky for one blunt reason: physics. This is the full story of the 1960s Gas class – the Willys coupes, the 9.93-second grudge match at Lions Drag Strip, and the rule changes that wiped the category off NHRA’s books by 1972.

Twenty-Three Minutes of Straight-Axle Chaos

What Gasser Actually Meant – And Why It Was Never Just a Look
The word gets thrown around loosely now, usually to describe any old car with its nose in the air. In period it was a rulebook term. Gassers ran on gasoline, as opposed to the nitromethane and alcohol burned in the fuel classes, and starting around 1955 the Gas category became the top rung for high-performance cars based on real production bodies. If it had a steel roof, a windshield and pump gas in the tank, this is where it raced.
Classification came down to arithmetic. NHRA divided competitors by dividing total vehicle weight by total engine displacement, then sorted the results into lettered brackets. Under the 1966 structure, A/Gas covered cars running 5.00 to 6.99 pounds per cubic inch, B/Gas ran 7.00 to 8.99, C/Gas 9.00 to 10.99, and so on down the alphabet. Supercharged entries were split off into their own designations – the double-letter classes such as AA/Gas – so a blown car never had to answer to an unblown one. The practical effect was that a builder could not simply bolt on more engine and dominate. Add displacement and you fell into a quicker bracket against faster company. Every extra cubic inch had to be paid for with either weight or performance, and that single equation drove nearly every decision these cars represent.
The Nose-High Stance Was Physics, Not Fashion
The signature gasser look exists because of tires. Bias-ply rubber in the early 1960s simply could not handle the torque these engines made, and a car that spun the tires off the line lost regardless of horsepower. The fix was mechanical and brutal: pull the stock independent front suspension, replace it with a solid straight beam axle on parallel leaf springs, and jack the front end up. Raising the nose moved the car’s weight rearward under acceleration, planting the rear tires hard enough to bite instead of smoke.
It also cut weight, which mattered in a class where weight literally determined your competition. A tube axle with leaf springs weighs a fraction of what a full independent front end weighs, so builders got a traction advantage and a class advantage in the same afternoon of work. The more committed teams went further, shifting the entire body forward on the frame or hanging lead ballast off the back to load the rear axle even harder. Nothing about the resulting shape was decorative. Every inch of ride height was a bet that the car would hook rather than haze, and the cars that got the geometry right beat cars that had more engine.
The Gasser Wars: Stone, Woods and Cook Against Big John Mazmanian
What turned a technical class into a national spectacle was a rivalry. The Stone, Woods and Cook Willys – fielded by Fred Stone and Tim Woods with Doug Cookie Cook driving – dominated both the win column and the fan vote through the first half of the 1960s. The team also mattered for reasons that had nothing to do with elapsed times: Stone and Woods were Black, Cook was white, and theirs is regarded as the first competitive multiracial team in drag racing, campaigning through the years surrounding the Civil Rights Act while team members were at times kept out of pit areas and pushed toward segregated grandstands.
Their natural opposite was Big John Mazmanian, whose immaculate candy red Willys was driven by engine builder Robert Bones Balogh. The two teams barnstormed the country match racing, and the feud pulled entire supplier camps in behind them – Engle camshafts backing Stone, Woods and Cook, Isky backing Mazmanian. After Balogh dropped a close one to Cook on a holeshot at the 1964 Winternationals, the two agreed to settle it that May at Lions Drag Strip. Both Willys left the line together and Cook took it by six hundredths of a second, running 9.93 at 141.06 mph. Read that again with 1964 in mind: a steel-bodied, fenders-and-glass production coupe, running gasoline, in the nines.
Ohio George and the 8,800-RPM Mustang That Ended the Argument
The other name that defined the era belonged to a gas station owner from Dayton. George Montgomery took his Cadillac-powered 1933 Willys to an A/Gas win at Detroit Dragway in 1959 in his very first national event appearance, running 11.94 at 124.65 mph and picking up Little Eliminator on the same weekend. He repeated at Detroit in 1960, then took the A/Gas Supercharged title at Indianapolis in 1961 with a 10.91 at 130.63. The nickname that stuck came from a rival – Tim Woods of the Stone, Woods and Cook team hung Ohio George on him at the 1963 Nationals.
Montgomery kept moving the target. For 1966 he switched to supercharged 427 SOHC Ford power in AA/Gas and won at Indy again with a 9.58 at 153.58 mph, and Ford backing eventually put him in the 8,800-rpm SOHC 427 Malco Gasser Mustang. By 1971 he was running a twin-turbocharged Mustang and still winning his class at the Nationals with an 8.50. Montgomery raced right through the class’s rise, peak and disappearance, and when he died in August 2023 the obituaries were unanimous that no one else so thoroughly owned the Gas ranks.
Why the Class Died – and Why It Refused to Stay Dead
Gassers were killed by the same rulebook that created them. As NHRA loosened restrictions on chassis modification through the 1960s, altered-wheelbase cars appeared with their rear axles moved forward, which transferred weight far more effectively than any straight axle ever could. Those cars became Funny Cars, and they were faster and louder than anything the Gas classes could answer with. Stone, Woods and Cook moved into Funny Car competition by 1967. Mazmanian followed. By 1969 the Gas ranks had largely been displaced, and Montgomery himself put it plainly years later – Funny Cars delivered the same basic show, only quicker, so spectators, promoters and sponsors went with them.
NHRA introduced Pro Stock at the 1970 Winternationals, which squeezed the survivors from the other direction, and by 1972 the Gasser class was gone from the rulebook entirely. That same year the sport lost one of its shrines: Lions Drag Strip in Wilmington, California, closed on December 2, 1972 after a crowd of 21,000 watched Don Moody break an elapsed time record on the final night. The stance, however, never went away. Nostalgia organizations rebuilt the old Gas rules from period rulebooks, and the straight-axle look outlived the class that invented it by more than fifty years.
What Makes These Cars Still Hit So Hard
Watch the compilation and the appeal is obvious in a way that modern drag racing rarely is. These are cars you can identify – a Willys, a tri-five, a shoebox Ford – doing something violent while still looking recognizably like something that once had a license plate. The sound is unmuffled and the traction is never guaranteed, which is why the near-flip moments land harder than any nine-second timeslip. There is also the accessibility of it, which the numbers make clear. That is the era this footage preserves – not the corporate, purpose-built machinery that replaced it, but the years when a gas station owner from Ohio could beat everyone with a 1933 Willys he built himself.
