Real Stories From The Muscle Car Fans First Car 71 Plymouth
This from John C who lived in Bloomington MN at the time of his story. Thanks for the story John.
First car
When I turned 16 I bought a 71 Plymouth Satellite Sebring. Paid $700 for it with paper route money and a small loan from my dad. Mild 318 with a Carter carb with a sticky automatic choke. Other than driving with the air cleaner cover upside down, I did nothing to boost the performance. I did, however, buy aluminum slots for the front and chrome rims with baby moons in the back, sporting off-brand 60s with raised white letters, of course. I learned the wonderful world of Bondo. I had it painted Rallye Red at Maaco and did the interior myself in leopard skim cloth I bought at the fabric store. Leopard skin on the dash, the back deck, the sun visors and on the seats, secured by Dritz twist pins. I jacked it up using leaf spring extender lift kits. Leaving Bridgemans Drive-in one night, I was pulled over by a Richfield cop, who broke out the measuring tape and found I was jacked up too high. Getting that fix it ticket was a point of pride which I showed off to my friends. Then I lowered the car a notch to satisfy the gendarmes. My friend Curt had a 68 Mustang GT 390, Doug had a 73 Fury, Steve had a 54 Chrysler New Yorker, Terry has access to his parents’ Gremlin, and Hornhead had a project V8 Vega constantly under construction in the garage. Jeff had a 74 Dart with Keystone Klassics, a fresh paint job, a kick ass stereo, and headers which were a bitch to put in.
