Chevrolet restyled the Camaro completely for 1969, then retired the body after a single season when the second-generation car arrived. Under the badge, the SS 396 could be ordered in three different states of tune, topping out with a solid-lifter 375-horsepower L78, plus an aluminum-head option that cost more than 700 dollars and added no advertised power at all. Chevrolet spent a fortune restyling the Camaro for 1969, then threw the tooling away after a single season. Every crease in that body, the deeper wheel arches, the slashed side vents, the wider stance that made the 1967 and 1968 cars look tentative by comparison, existed for exactly one model year before the completely different second-generation car arrived. Underneath, though, the mechanicals carried straight over, which produced an odd situation: the most desirable-looking first-generation Camaro shares its bones with the two years before it. And on the SS 396 order sheet, Chevrolet quietly offered three different big-block outputs plus an option so obscure that plenty of Camaro owners have never heard of it.
A Body That Existed for One Season
The 1969 restyle was comprehensive above the chassis and nonexistent below it. Chevrolet gave the car all-new outer sheet metal, a wider-looking grille with a deep V, and the distinctive horizontal speed lines stamped into the front fenders and doors, while retaining the same 108-inch wheelbase, the same subframe and the same suspension geometry as the two years before. Because the second-generation Camaro was running late, Chevrolet extended the 1969 model year well into that autumn, which is why 1969 production reached roughly 243,000 cars, the highest total of the entire first generation.

Three Engines Wearing the Same Badge
Ordering an SS 396 in 1969 meant choosing among three distinct states of tune. The standard engine, the L35, was rated at 325 horsepower. Above it sat the L34 at 350 horsepower with a higher-lift hydraulic camshaft and stronger internals. At the top was the L78, a genuinely serious engine running a solid-lifter camshaft, 11.0:1 compression, big-port rectangular heads and a 780-cfm Holley on an aluminum intake, rated at 375 horsepower at 5,600 rpm. All three shared the same 396-cubic-inch displacement and the same badging, which means the fender emblem tells you almost nothing about what is actually in the car.
The Aluminum-Head Option Almost Nobody Ordered
One step further up the order sheet sat RPO L89, which added a pair of aluminum cylinder heads to the L78 for an additional 710 dollars and 95 cents. That was extraordinary money in 1969, close to a fifth of the price of a base Camaro, and it bought no additional advertised horsepower whatsoever. What it bought was roughly seventy-five pounds removed from directly over the front wheels, which mattered enormously to anyone actually racing the car. Only a few hundred Camaros were built with the combination, and a documented L89 car today occupies a rarefied corner of the market that most casual buyers never encounter.
What the L78 Did at the Strip
The L78’s performance is the reason people still chase these cars. Period road tests recorded quarter-mile runs in the neighborhood of 14.7 seconds at just under 99 mph on the bias-ply tires of the day, which was quick enough to embarrass a great many cars costing substantially more. Those numbers came from an engine that idled badly, needed premium fuel and demanded valve lash adjustments as routine maintenance. Nobody bought an L78 for convenience, and the buyers who did tended to be the ones who drove them straight to the local strip.
Transmissions and the Gearing That Mattered
Behind the big block, buyers chose between a close-ratio Muncie four-speed and the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic, the heavy-duty three-speed automatic Chevrolet reserved for its highest-output applications. Rear axle ratios ran from mild highway gearing down to 4.10:1 for the genuinely committed, with Positraction available and effectively mandatory on any car making real power. The combination of a solid-lifter big block, close-ratio gears and a short final drive turned the Camaro into a car that was miserable on the highway and superb everywhere the owner actually cared about.
The Brakes Chevrolet Should Have Made Standard
The brake situation deserves mention because it explains a great deal about how these cars drove. Front discs came with the SS package, which was an improvement, but the rear remained drums on virtually every car built. Chevrolet did offer RPO JL8, a four-wheel disc setup adapted from Corvette practice, and it was fitted to a famously tiny number of Camaros, well under three hundred. The Central Office Production Order system allowed dealers to circumvent GM’s displacement limit for the intermediate body, and COPO 9561 cars left the factory with the 427-cubic-inch L72 rated at 425 horsepower. Rarer still was COPO 9560, which carried the all-aluminum ZL1 427 and was built in a quantity of just 69 cars. Those exist in an entirely different financial universe, but they are the reason the SS 396 is sometimes underrated by people comparing headline numbers.
Why 13,970 Is the Number That Sets the Market
Chevrolet built 13,970 SS 396 Camaros for the 1969 model year across all three engine ratings. Against total production of roughly 243,000 cars, that is under six percent, and the L78 and L89 subsets are far smaller still. Add the fact that the body was replaced entirely for 1970 and never returned, and the scarcity compounds. That combination, a one-year-only shape, a genuinely limited big-block production run, and a set of options most people cannot identify on sight, is why documentation on one of these cars is worth nearly as much as the car itself.
