The Shape That Started It All
1969 was the final year of the first-generation Camaro, and Chevrolet marked it with all-new sheet metal over carryover drivetrain and mechanicals – only the hood, trunk lid, and roof carried over from 1968. A redesigned V-shaped grille with deep-inset headlights, new door skins, reshaped rear quarter panels, and a new rear valance panel gave the car a lower, wider look. Chevrolet built 243,085 Camaros that year, with 214,280 of them coupes and just 16,519 convertibles.
What the Factory Never Offered
Factory SS buyers in 1969 could choose a 350 or 396 cubic inch V8, with the 396 offered in 325, 350, or a rare 375-horsepower L89 aluminum-head form, of which only 311 were built. The optional 427 cubic inch V8 topped out at 425 horsepower, and only about 1,000 cars got the L72 version, alongside a mere 69 ultra-rare ZL1 Camaros. Turbocharging was not on that list – Chevrolet’s engineers of the era chased horsepower through cubic inches, not boost. A modern twin-turbo build like this one reaches for numbers the factory could only get to with a much bigger engine.
