Yenko ordered Camaros equipped with the L78 396, which came rated at 375 horsepower, and then his shop pulled those engines out and installed 427s in their place. Under COPO 9561, Yenko could order Camaros with the L72 427 installed at the factory, alongside the heavy-duty cooling, suspension and axle hardware the engine required. Chevrolet built the cars. Yenko added the stripes, badging, and in many cases headers and other performance parts, then sold them. The L72 was a solid-lifter 427 with rectangular-port heads, a forged crankshaft, four-bolt mains and a big Holley on an aluminum intake. Gross horsepower ratings in this era were measured without accessories, exhaust systems or the realities of an engine bay, and manufacturers adjusted them upward or downward to suit racing classifications and insurance underwriters. The honest summary is that an L72 Camaro made considerably more than either number suggests at the crank.

Olympic Gold Among the Yenko Colors

The 1969 Yenko Camaros were ordered in a short list of colors, and Olympic Gold sits among the less common of them.
