A Double Centennial: Indy 500 and Chevrolet Turn 100

2011 marked both the 100th anniversary of the first Indianapolis 500 and Chevrolet’s centennial as a brand, and this Camaro was the 22nd Chevrolet and 7th Camaro chosen to pace the race, driven on the parade lap ahead of the 33-car field.

Only 500 Built, Echoing a 1969 Design

The Pace Car’s Summit White exterior is accented with orange stripes and door graphics, while the interior is trimmed in orange leather, including front-seat headrests embossed with the Indy 500 logo, alongside white door panels and instrument-panel trim. It came equipped with the 2SS package plus the RS appearance package, a 400-horsepower V8, and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Only 500 replica convertibles were built for retail sale, which is why a low-mile example with fewer than 1,500 original miles is such a find today.

A Tradition That Started in 1969

The Camaro’s relationship with the Indianapolis 500 dates back to 1967, but it was the 1969 Camaro SS Pace Car, with its now-iconic orange-and-white livery, that became the most recognizable and collectible of the bunch.
