The Last of the First Generation
The Mach 1 package launched in August 1968 for the 1969 model year and would go on to run through 1978, but 1973 held a unique and somewhat unglamorous distinction: it was the final year of the original first-generation Mustang platform, and Ford built fewer Mach 1s in 1973 than in any other year of the option’s run. The Mach 1 package itself brought a NASA-style hood, honeycomb grille, blackout trim, dual color-keyed racing mirrors, front disc brakes, and a firmer competition suspension.
Two Versions of the Same V8
Under the hood, the 351 Cleveland came in two distinct states of tune for 1973. The two-barrel version, like the one in this car, produced 177 horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque, while the four-barrel option made 266 horsepower and 301 lb-ft. Both shared the Cleveland’s overhead-valve, cast-iron architecture with five main bearings. Notably, the high-output 351HO had already been dropped from the lineup by 1973, leaving the 2-barrel 351 as the only engine still available with factory Ram Air induction.
