Leaf springs gave classic Mopars their character and their single most frustrating flaw: axle hop that turns a hard launch into wasted motion. Swapping to a triangulated four-link ends it for good, but the install demands a welder, a quarter-inch of thread measured exactly right, and a decision about whether you are willing to modify a car permanently. Here is what the conversion actually involves, what it changes on the street as well as the strip, and which Mopars should keep their leaf springs.

There is a specific noise a leaf-sprung Mopar makes when you finally give it everything it has, and it is not the noise you were hoping for. It starts as a stutter through the floorpan, becomes a rapid hammering you can feel in the seat, and ends with the car several tenths slower than it should have been. Every Chrysler product built on leaf springs does it eventually, and no amount of tire will make it stop permanently. The fix that suspension shops keep steering owners toward involves cutting away hardware Chrysler installed at the factory and welding in something the engineers in Highland Park never drew. The surprising part is how many people are now attempting it on jack stands in their own garage, and how thin the margin is between a transformed car and an expensive mistake.
Why the Factory Setup Runs Out of Talent
Chrysler’s leaf-spring rear suspension was a genuinely good piece of engineering for what it was asked to do in 1970: locate a live axle, carry the weight of a mid-size car, and cost almost nothing to build. What it was never asked to do was survive repeated full-throttle launches on sticky tires. Under load a leaf spring winds up like a giant torsion bar, releases, and winds up again, and the axle bounces through that cycle several times per second. That is wheel hop, and it costs more than elapsed time. It hammers U-joints, batters pinion snubbers, and on unibody cars without subframe connectors it puts twisting loads straight into a floorpan that was never designed to absorb them. What a Triangulated Four-Link Actually Changes
A triangulated four-link removes the spring’s second job entirely. Two lower bars handle fore-and-aft thrust, two angled upper bars locate the axle laterally without needing a Panhard bar, and a separate coilover carries the weight. Nothing has to twist in order to work, which is why the hop stops rather than merely getting quieter. Reilly MotorSports built its Street-Lynx system around exactly that idea for classic Mopar B-bodies and E-bodies, using factory-style flex joints instead of harsh spherical rod ends so the car remains tolerable on a broken road. The Quarter-Inch That Decides Everything
The most-repeated mistake on this install has nothing to do with welding. The upper bars must be trimmed and threaded so that exactly a quarter inch of thread remains showing at each end, and both bars have to finish at identical lengths. Miss that and the axle sits cocked in the car, one tire ahead of the other, thrust angle off, and the car will pull under acceleration no matter how carefully the front end is aligned afterward. The lower bars carry their own dimension straight from the installation manual, and that number sets the instant center, which is the geometry that decides whether the chassis plants the tires or unloads them on a hard launch. Measure twice is not a cliche on this job. It is the entire difference between a transformed car and a costly lateral move.
Where the Welder Comes In
The welding is the step that decides whether this project stays in the driveway. The forward crossmember and bar mounts have to be welded into the unibody, and Mopar unibodies are thin in precisely the places that matter. Most builders reinforce the torque boxes and add subframe connectors at the same time, partly because the car is already in the air and partly because a four-link concentrates load into structure the factory never expected to see it. If you own a decent MIG welder, can lay and grind a clean joint, and are comfortable working overhead with the fuel tank dropped, it is achievable at home. If your welding experience ends at exhaust hangers, this is the point to buy a fabrication shop lunch and pay a labor rate instead.
Choose the Housing Before You Choose the Bars
Owners tend to shop the link kit first and think about the axle second, which is backwards. A four-link only pays off if the housing behind it can absorb the load, and the traditional Mopar answer is the 8-3/4: strong, widely supported, and built around a drop-out third member that turns a gear change into a driveway job instead of a weekend. Behind serious big-block torque the Dana 60 remains the step up, at the cost of extra weight and a far less friendly ratio swap. Buying a ready-to-install housing bundled with the link kit eliminates guesswork on bracket placement and axle width entirely, and for a first-time installer that convenience is usually worth more than whatever is saved by adapting a junkyard unit of unknown width.
What Changes on the Street, Not Just the Strip
The drag strip benefit is the headline, but street manners are what owners actually notice day to day. Testers running the conversion report the hop disappearing off the line, and also less body roll through a corner and a rear end that stops skating sideways over mid-corner bumps. That second behavior is pure leaf-spring physics: the springs have to flex laterally in order to work at all, so the axle moves side to side whether you want it to or not. Add the optional rear sway bar and a car that used to lean and push starts rotating like something designed in the radial-tire era. The trade-off is ride quality, because a coilover is only as good as the spring rate and valving specified for it, and a rate chosen for 60-foot times will punish you on a long highway drive.
The Question Every Numbers-Matching Owner Has to Answer
None of this is reversible in an afternoon. Welding brackets into the floor of a documented car permanently changes it, and in a market where originality carries real money on rare Mopars, that matters more than any elapsed time. The split most experienced builders land on is straightforward. A genuine, documented, low-production car keeps its leaf springs and finds traction through Super Stock springs, a correctly set pinion snubber, and a good pair of slapper bars. A clone, a resto-mod, or a car that was already modified decades ago is exactly the right candidate for a four-link, because the upside is enormous and the originality was never on the table to begin with. Decide honestly which car is sitting in your garage before you strike the first arc.
