NHRA #50 Elmer Trett Top Fuel Record Breaker
While not an automotive drag racer, Elmer Trett was an extremely important part of NHRA history.
For almost 30 years Elmer Trett was the man who made Top Fuel motorcycles seem like rockets on the drag strip. With 8 national titles and a knack for making and driving the fastest motorcycles of the day, he was the top points earner in 90,93 and 94. He started serious motorcycle racing in the mid-sixties and was the first driver to break the 200 mph motorcycle drag racing record in 1983.Several more firsts followed in his career with runs breaking 210,220 and 230 MPH.
He was a mechanical genius with a new record of 6.06 at the ProStar event at the Indianapolis Raceway Park in August of 1996, just 2 weeks before his untimely death. His quest at the time was to try and break the 6-second mark.
He was a man respected for being a pioneer, innovator, and mentor to dozens of younger motorcycle racers.

Watched him race at Huntsville Dragway back in 1988 and 1989.
Wish I had seen him race. I was always amazed by the nerves of steel they had to go that fast on a bike!
Trett held the top speed and quarter mile time records if not to this day for a very long time. I believe his 1/4 mile time was in the high 5 second range. Oh and sorry folks that ain’t no Harley based engine there.
His best time was 6.06. Set 2 weeks before he passed away racing to break the 6 second mark
One of his first bikes was a Harley with two engines in it.
Muscle Car Fan Pretty sure he hit 5.99 but couldn’t back it up. His Top speed was over 230 mph if memory serves me correct but I think” he didn’t back that up either ( might have been 240????) The block on his and most of the pushing close to the 5 second zone Top Fuelers were packing Suzuki based engines but essentially there was very little Suzuki left after they had been “tuned up. No one else at that time came very close to him unless he had a “bad run”/
Yay :p
Pretty amazing!
