The King wanted a winged car for 1969, Plymouth told him no, and he took his talents to Ford — so Chrysler’s answer was to bolt a fiberglass nose cone and a rear wing tall enough to see over a crowd onto an ordinary Road Runner and hand him the keys. It worked. Petty came back for 1970, the winged Plymouths went hunting on the superspeedways, and NASCAR rewrote its own rulebook within a single season to stop what those cars were doing. What nobody at Chrysler saw coming was the second act — the part where the most outrageous-looking muscle car Detroit ever sold sat rotting on dealer lots so long that some dealers sawed the wings off just to move them.

The Car Chrysler Built to Win Back One Driver

The Superbird exists because of a defection. Petty had spent his career winning in Plymouths, and when Chrysler gave the aerodynamic Charger Daytona program to Dodge for 1969 and left Plymouth without an equivalent, Petty went racing for Ford. Losing the sport’s biggest name to a rival is the kind of thing that gets budgets approved in a hurry. For 1970 Plymouth got its own wing car, and Petty came home.

The engineering was less exotic than it looks. Underneath, a Superbird is a 1970 Road Runner — same B-body bones, same interior, same drivetrain catalog. What Chrysler added was aerodynamics: a pointed fiberglass nose cone with pop-up headlights that stretched the car roughly nineteen inches longer than a standard Road Runner, plus a rear wing standing about two feet off the decklid. The wing was not a styling flourish. Mounted that high, it sat in clean air above the turbulence coming off the roof and rear glass, where it could actually plant the back of the car at superspeedway speeds instead of just adding drag.

The engine choices were pure Mopar. Base cars got the 440 Super Commando with a single four-barrel, rated at 375 horsepower. Step up and you could have the 440 Six Barrel with three two-barrel carburetors, good for 390. At the top sat the 426 Hemi, rated at 425 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 490 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 — a number Chrysler was famously conservative about, and one that racers spent the next fifty years arguing was underrated on purpose.

Why Plymouth Had to Build So Many More Than Dodge

Here is the detail most people get wrong. The Dodge Charger Daytona and the Plymouth Superbird are usually lumped together as the same idea in two flavors, but they were homologated under completely different math. Dodge only had to build 500 street cars to make the Daytona legal for NASCAR, and it built 503. By the time the Superbird came along, NASCAR had tightened the rule to one street car for every two of the manufacturer’s U.S. dealerships — which for Plymouth meant a production run of roughly 1,935 cars.

That single rule change is why the Superbird is simultaneously more common and more troublesome than its Dodge cousin. Plymouth did not build 1,935 of these because it expected to sell 1,935 of them. It built them because the rulebook said it had to, and then it had to find people willing to park one in a suburban driveway in 1970.

It is also worth remembering what the winged Mopars were built to beat. This was the peak of what enthusiasts now call the aero wars: Ford had already fielded the slippery Torino Talladega and Mercury the Cyclone Spoiler II, both slick-nosed homologation specials aimed squarely at superspeedway lap times. Chrysler’s response was not to shave a nose smooth — it was to graft on an entirely new one and add a wing you could see from the grandstands. It was the least subtle answer available, and on the big ovals it was the correct one.

Within that run, the truly rare cars are the Hemi cars. Only 135 Superbirds left the factory with the 426 Hemi, and 77 of those 135 were ordered with the three-speed TorqueFlite automatic — which leaves just 58 Hemi Superbirds built with a four-speed manual. Filter that number again by color, and the survivors get very thin indeed.

The Vitamin C Hemi That Sat in an Ohio Barn

Which brings us to the car in the video. Comedian and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham — a serious collector who is refreshingly loud about the fact that he actually drives what he owns — brought his Vitamin C orange Superbird to Jay Leno’s Garage, and it is one of the good ones: 426 Hemi, four-speed, one of that 58-car subset before you even start counting paint codes. It came out of Ohio, where it had been sitting in a barn, its second owner a dentist who apparently had no particular plans for it.

That combination is the whole story of the Superbird in one car. It was too much car for 1970, so it got parked. It stayed parked long enough to become a barn find. And it emerged decades later as one of the most valuable pieces of American muscle car history precisely because so few people wanted it when it was new.

The Leno segment is worth the full runtime for reasons beyond the spec sheet. Leno’s reviews have a reputation for being unusually honest — he does not manufacture excitement for cars that do not deserve it — and here he does not have to. The two of them spend most of the drive laughing, trading NASCAR history, and marveling at how a car this absurd got federally approved and sold to the public. Viewers latched onto one exchange in particular: Dunham noting the car will not fit in his garage, and Leno immediately offering to keep it.

The Rule Change That Killed It — and the Dealers Who Cut the Wings Off

On the track, the winged cars worked exactly as intended. In March 1970 at Talladega, Buddy Baker put a Dodge Charger Daytona around the closed course at 200.447 mph — the first time anyone had officially broken 200 on a closed course. Petty and the Superbird spent the season doing the kind of damage Plymouth had paid for.

NASCAR’s response was surgical. For 1971 the sanctioning body did not ban the aero cars outright; it simply limited any car with that special aerodynamic bodywork to 305 cubic inches, while conventional bodies kept running big blocks. A 305-cube winged car against a 429 Ford is not a race, it is a parade. Plymouth read the rule, did the arithmetic, and dropped the Superbird after a single model year.

The showroom story was even less dignified. Buyers in 1970 did not know what to make of a road car with a wing they could walk under and a nose that made parking a guessing game. Superbirds lingered on lots into 1971 and beyond, and more than a few dealers took the obvious commercial route: pull the nose cone, pull the wing, bolt on standard Road Runner sheet metal, and sell the car as something a normal person would buy. Every one of those conversions destroyed a car that would eventually be worth many times a standard Road Runner.

That history is exactly why buying one today is a documentation exercise before it is a driving decision. Because a Superbird starts life as a Road Runner and because the signature parts bolt on, the nose and wing alone prove nothing — period-correct and reproduction wing car components have been available for decades. Serious buyers work from the VIN and the fender tag first, then chase the broadcast sheet and any surviving factory paperwork, and treat a Hemi claim as unproven until the engine’s own numbers back it up. On a car where the difference between a 440 and a 426 Hemi can be measured in hundreds of thousands of dollars, a verified paper trail is worth more than fresh paint.

Why the Superbird Still Stops People Cold

Ask anyone who was a kid in 1970 and you get the same story back. Adults thought it was ridiculous. Kids stopped whatever they were doing and stared until it was out of sight. That split is the Superbird’s entire cultural function — it is the one muscle car that never had to explain itself, because the shape did all the talking from three blocks away.

There is also a mechanical detail that modern enthusiasts keep circling back to. These cars were running near 200 mph in race trim with a four-speed and no overdrive gear to hide behind. Everything was happening in the engine and the gearbox, with the aerodynamics doing the rest. In an era of eight-, nine-, and ten-speed automatics and computer-managed boost, the idea of a 426 Hemi and four ratios doing that job is genuinely startling.

Value has followed rarity. A documented, numbers-matching Hemi Superbird — particularly a four-speed car in one of the high-impact colors like Vitamin C — now sits among the most sought-after American cars of the era, routinely trading in six and seven figures depending on documentation and originality. The cars that dealers de-winged in 1971 to make a sale are the ones that hurt to think about.

The Superbird was built to solve one problem: get Richard Petty back in a Plymouth. It solved that problem completely, got legislated out of existence for being too good at it, and then spent a decade being the hardest car in America to sell. Fifty-plus years later it is one of the few muscle cars that people who do not care about cars can still identify on sight. That is not a bad run for a homologation special nobody asked for.
