How the Trans Am Became a Numbers Game

Pontiac built only 697 Trans Ams for the 1969 model year, its debut season, making every surviving example scarce before any engine options even enter the conversation. Within that already-small run, just 55 cars were ordered with the Ram Air IV engine, and only 46 of those paired it with a four-speed manual. The true outlier goes a step further: Pontiac’s Ram Air V, a purpose-built high-revving engine developed for SCCA Trans-Am racing homologation, was installed in exactly one 1969 Trans Am as an engineering test vehicle. Two years later, Pontiac simplified things by making the 455 HO the only engine available in the 1971 Trans Am. Pontiac initially rated the 1973 version at 310 net horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, then detuned the 1974 version under continued regulatory pressure to 290 horsepower and 395 lb-ft.
