Building an actual factory concept is a meaningful commitment for a shop the size of Shelby American, and it is why this particular anniversary car registered differently than a trim package would have. Concepts consume engineering hours, fabrication capacity, and shop space that could otherwise be turning out customer cars, and they generate no revenue on their own. Companies build them for one of two reasons: to gauge public reaction before committing to production tooling, or to make a statement about capability that a brochure cannot make on its own. That Shelby had not produced one in more than ten years signals just how much weight the company placed on the Super Snake’s fiftieth. It also changed the nature of the conversation around the car. Under the hood sat a supercharged 5.0-liter Ford V8 producing 750 horsepower. That figure puts the concept in genuinely serious company, and it arrives through forced induction on an engine architecture already known for revving happily. The Coyote V8’s four-valve heads and short stroke give it a character quite different from the pushrod big-blocks the original Super Snakes were built around. Where a 1960s Shelby made its case with displacement and torque, this one made it with boost and engine speed, which is precisely the combination a road-course car wants.
Brakes Sized for Consecutive Laps
The brake package was specified to match. Brembo hardware handled the stopping, with 16-inch rotors clamped by six-piston calipers at the front and 14-inch rotors with four-piston calipers at the rear. Those are track-day proportions rather than street-car proportions, and they signal intent as clearly as the suspension does. Braking capacity is the limiting factor in most road-course sessions long before power is, because heat management determines how many consecutive laps a car can run before the pedal starts going long. What the Original 1967 Super Snake Actually Was
Some context on the name itself helps explain why any of this was a big deal. The original Super Snake was a one-off 1967 GT500 built with a race-derived 427 in place of the standard 428, created as a tire-test mule and then offered for sale at a price nobody was willing to pay at the time. It became one of the most valuable Shelby Mustangs in existence. Every Super Snake since has been trading on that legend, which raises the bar for what a fiftieth-anniversary car ought to be. A stripe package would not have cleared it.
Post-Title Conversion Versus Factory Shelby
It is also worth understanding what kind of company builds these. Shelby American’s modern Mustangs are post-title conversions, meaning a customer or dealer buys a Ford Mustang first and the car then goes to Shelby for modification. A supercharged F-150 making the same headline horsepower figure as the Mustang concept was a deliberate statement that the Shelby treatment was no longer confined to sports cars.
Why the Registry Entry Outlasts the Horsepower
Every car built by Shelby American gets logged into the company’s official registry, which is the single most important factor in long-term value for cars like these. The registry documents specification, build number, and ownership history, and it is what separates a genuine Shelby conversion from a replica wearing the right badges. For a limited-production concept-derived car, that paperwork eventually becomes as valuable as the hardware. Fifty years from now, the entry in the registry will matter more than the horsepower figure anyone quoted at the reveal.
