The 1983 Fox-body Mustang GLX convertible almost never happened the way people assume — Ford shipped brand-new coupes out to a contractor just to get the top cut off and a folding roof installed. Add a four-barrel carb that boosted the 5.0 V8 by nearly fifty horsepower, and you have got a genuinely underappreciated turning point in Mustang history hiding behind a badge nobody talks about.
A turbocharged Fox Body Mustang making a claimed 1,200 horsepower walked into a Street Car Takeover event and beat a twin turbo Coyote swapped Mustang that ran an 8.21 second quarter mile in the same final. That is a car from the Reagan administration outrunning modern factory engineering on modern tires. The Fox platform keeps producing results like this for reasons that have very little to do with luck, and a great deal to do with weight, architecture, and thirty years of aftermarket development.
