Installing an aftermarket 5- or 6-speed has become one of the most popular upgrades for classic cars and trucks, thanks to the features, strength and performance offered with Tremec five- and six-speed transmissions. Things to remember when upgrading to a Tremec 5 speed. 1.) Is your Transmission tunnel big enough? Cars ( Chevrolets ) prior to 1968 had small transmission tunnels. You’d have to increase the size. 2.) The rear motor mount ( transmission to crossmember mount) will be further back. You will have to change crossmember and/or location. 3.) The shifter position will have changed. If you have a console, it will have to be moved/removed. Or, have an adaptor made for the shifter handle position. 4.) If your previous transmission was not a Turbo Automatic you will probably have to get a new yoke for your driveline. 5.) Your driveline will need to be shortened and ( at least ) one universal changed. 6.) Your clutch will need to be upgraded for the spline of the tremec. It is different than the spline on your original tranny, most likely. Knowing these things up front will keep you appraised of some of the costs that go along with changing to a Tremec, in earlier model Chevys. Also, knowing this up front will keep your anxiety level at a minimum. ;) Been there. Done that.
Bottom line, and I speak from experience, thinking you’re just buy no a news trans for say $2995 is WRONG. LOL – try a conversion kit, adjustments, mods, extras, etc. all in all on our ’69 hooking it to a new LS3 525 HP not included – you’re looking at $8000+
Granted there is extra work and dollars involved but upgrading to a Tremec 5 speed trans has been the single greatest upgrade to my 69 Camaro ever.
