By 1970, that joke had become one of the most feared options on any drag strip in America. Pontiac built barely a fraction of that year’s total GTO production with Judge badging, and rarer still were the ones ordered as convertibles instead of hardtops. Paint it in a shade of orange loud enough to be seen from space, and you had a muscle car that refused to be ignored. So what actually justified the reputation once the Judge left the courtroom joke behind and hit the quarter-mile?

A Courtroom Joke That Became a Legend

The Judge name really did come from Laugh-In’s catchphrase, and Pontiac leaned into the joke with Orbit Orange, a bright, almost school-bus yellow-orange hue that became the package’s signature color for 1970 – though buyers could still order a Judge in any GTO color available. The package came standard with the Ram Air 400 V8, with the higher-output Ram Air IV available as an option. The 455 HO V8 was offered on the standard GTO for the entire model year but wasn’t added to the Judge lineup until late in the year.

The performance backed up the reputation: a Ram Air IV-equipped Judge could run the quarter-mile in the mid-13-second range, with one documented pass at 13.60 seconds and 104.5 mph.
