Audi R8 – continued… One More for the Road

The Audi R8 V10 MTM 5-liter Biturbo was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011, but by 2013, this model had come a long way. I’m talking about under the hood; the exterior and cabin changed very little. The Biturbo with the GT option for ’13 now developed 802hp (589.87 kW) with 892 Nm (657 lbs.-ft.) of torque between 2750-6280 rpm and did 0-100 km/h  in 3 seconds flat with a top speed of more than 358.9 km/h (223 mph).

The Audi R8 V10 chassis now had a three-way adjustment feature, and the wheels were 9×20  inches in front and 12.6×20 inches for the rear and wore Michelin Sport Cup tires. The car’s stopping capabilities increased with dimpled rotors and eight-piston calipers. The model, as equipped from the showroom, had a sticker price at the time of around $600,000 US or 450,000 British pounds.

The Audi Coupe 4.2 FSI quarto, as with all Audi products, came with the signature AWD, which sent 30 percent of the power to the front wheels and 70 percent to the rear. The original all-aluminum block 32 valve, 4.2L V8 engine was reworked for 2010. This engine has a dry sump lubrication system, two chain-driven overhead cams, and had a variable timing system in place for both the intake and the exhaust valves. The choice in transmissions was either the six-speed manual by Lamborghini or the Audi R-tronic seven-speed semi-automatic, which could shift or drive in the auto-mode. There’s no clutch in the R-tronic, but an S-tronic version was scheduled for a 2010 release with a double clutch, direct shift.

The Audi R6 Spyder 4.2 FSI quarto for 2011 was available with the 4.2-liter engine delivering 428 bhp (319 kW; 434 PS), or the coupe version would put out 442 bhp.  The other engine for the Spyder was a V10 power plant that did 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 299 km/h (185 mph). Both engines have the Audi R-tronic transmission. The Spyder version had an electric folding cloth top as standard equipment.

The Audi R8 TDI LeMans was a road-legal V12 concept vehicle shown in 2008. The unit displayed was a bright red color with rhombus patterned coverings on the air inlets as well as the outlets. The roof had two large transparent inserts with the NACA duct-mounted between the two. The engine compartment had a carbon fiber liner, located behind the front seats, with a glazed compartment face. Other external features were the continuous spoiler lip made of aluminum and LED headlights.

The well-appointed interior had a three-spoke manganese steering wheel, leather seats, and an interior extensively trimmed with aluminum. The braking was with six-piston calipers, aluminum in front with fixed versions to the rear, stopping the vented carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide discs. Audi shelved this concept model due to the very high retail price.
