A 1969 Chevelle SS 396 and a 1987 Buick GNX are separated by eighteen years and two completely opposed ideas about how to build a fast car. One answers with cubic inches and a big-block soundtrack. It was expensive, it was ordered by very few buyers, and it is the option code that separates a valuable Chevelle from an extremely valuable one today. Documented, numbers-matching L89 cars are among the most sought-after Chevelles of the era precisely because the take rate was so low. How the SS 396 Actually Drove
In practice the SS 396 drove the way its specification suggests, which was fast in a straight line and demanding everywhere else. Torque arrived early and abundantly, the car accelerated hard, and the soundtrack was and remains a large part of the appeal. Braking and cornering were another matter entirely, since these cars carried substantial weight over a front suspension and drum or early disc brake setup that were never developed to match the engine. It was an outcome that made a lot of people at General Motors uncomfortable and made the GNX instantly legendary. Nearly forty years later that figure still reads as genuinely quick rather than merely impressive-for-its-era.
Rarity Cuts in Both Directions
Rarity favors the Buick and volume favors the Chevrolet, and both facts cut in unexpected directions. With only 547 GNXs built, finding one is difficult, verifying one is straightforward, and buying one is expensive. Chevelle SS 396 production ran into the tens of thousands, which makes ownership realistic for far more people and makes parts, expertise, and community support abundant. It also means documentation matters enormously, because a car this commonly cloned requires build sheets and cowl tags to establish what it actually is. What Each One Costs Today
Values reflect all of that. Well-documented GNX examples with low mileage have climbed into territory that would have astonished anyone watching them depreciate as used cars in the early 1990s, driven by the fixed production number and the model’s cultural standing. Chevelle SS 396 values spread across a very wide band depending on engine code, documentation, condition, and originality, with L78 and L89 cars sitting far above base L35 examples and clones sitting well below all of them. Both are firmly established collector cars now, and neither is getting cheaper.
Why This Argument Never Actually Ends
The reason this comparison never resolves is that the two cars are not really competing on the same axis. The Chevelle offers the full sensory experience of the classic era, the displacement, the sound, the visual drama, and a driving character that is inseparable from its period. The GNX offers a technical argument that turned out to be correct, that forced induction and clever engineering would eventually make large displacement optional. Everything built since has proved the Buick right, which is precisely why so many people who love the Chevelle would still rather not concede the point out loud.
