Built to Beat Physics, Not Just Rivals
The wing cars were built to solve a very specific problem: raw aerodynamic drag at 200 mph. The 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona was the first NASCAR entry to break that barrier, and its towering rear wing wasn’t decoration — it was engineered to reach up into the smoother, less turbulent air above the car’s roofline, where it could actually do its job. Dodge built only 503 Charger Daytonas for the street, each powered by either a 440-cubic-inch V8 or the optional 426 Hemi. A year later, Plymouth answered with the Superbird, but NASCAR had changed the homologation math: instead of the old 500-car minimum, the rule now required one car for every two Plymouth dealerships nationwide, pushing the build requirement past 1,920 units. Plymouth ultimately built around 1,935.
Why NASCAR Pulled the Plug

What had briefly been NASCAR’s fastest cars became, almost overnight, a closed chapter.
