The Bugatti Veyron roadster in the Super sport Vitesse version is the fastest car in the world which is legal for the street reaching a speed of 267.856 mph (431.027 km/h) , at least up until April 06 2013. This record has been a controversy for the Guinness World Records with the Hennessey Venom also claiming that title in the record book. This has been solved and the Venom is officially holder of second place being 2.1 mph (3.4 km/h slower than the Veyron. The Veyron is a mid-engine mount grand touring car; a product of the Volkswagen Group and is manufactured in France. The Veyron was voted car of the year in 2005 by BBC program Top Gear. The standard version has a top speed of 253.81 mph (408.47 km/h) with a large number of different models available. The car, when purchased new, comes with the feature of the purchaser able to chose custom interior appointments as well as the colors; both inside and out via the companies official website.

The VW Group purchased the rights to the name “Bugatti” in 1998 when the work began resurrecting the automobile and the name. The name Veyron honors engineer, test driver, and race driver Pierre Veyron while the “EB 16.4” version name refers to the 16 cylinders and the four turbochargers powering the car. The first prototype equipped with an 18 cylinder engine was shown to the public in 1999; a number of prototypes later – most of which are equipped with three banks of six cylinder engines the name Veyron is decided on and it was established that the car would have two side by side eight cylinder engines. The cars production started in 2001 with the first street legal Veyron produced in 2003, but it is not until 2005 that the first models are available to the public.

The main feature of the Viron are the two mid-mounted narrow angle V8 engines with a total displacement of 7,993 cu cm (487.8 cu in); each cylinder is equipped with 4 valves and with the motors configuration only four camshafts are needed to drive them with the fuel supplied by four turbochargers Just to maintain its cool the Veyron has a bank of ten radiators. However only three radiators are for the engine; as for the others  – one does engine oil cooling, one for air con, one cools the transmission oil, and one for the transmission.

The Veyron transmission, made by Ricardo of England, is a duel clutch direct-shift gearbox equipped with seven gear ratios and a shift time under 150 milliseconds. Shifting is optional for the Veyron; the operator can chose from modes of either fully automatic, semi-automatic, or manual  and use the magnesium paddles mounted behind the steering wheel.

The cars special Michelin PAX run-flat tires are designed specifically for the all wheel drive Veyron. Should you wear them out – no problem – new ones can be acquired but you have to send the rims to France to have them mounted. Perhaps the best idea is to take the whole car to France, say in the fall to change the tires, then you could do a vineyard tour at the same time. Oh yes, the cost for a new set of tires is $70,000.00 – not sure if that includes the freight bill though. While I am on replacement costs; should you require a new transmission, this is not an issue either, it can be provided for this year’s price of $120,000.00. If you are a dollar wise person perhaps a spare transmission stored in your garage may save money in the long run with inflation the way it is. I am sorry – I am not certain on the price of a new Veyron even if you buy the car without the tires and transmission I am certain it is still out of most peoples price range!
