AMCs Underdog Pony Car
AMC was the little guy in the pony car wars, but the Javelin punched well above its weight when it launched for 1968, selling 55,124 units in its debut year alone. By 1969, total Javelin production settled at 40,675, and for the first time the sportier SST trim actually outsold the base model, moving 23,286 units. Buyers were not just picking a Javelin because it was cheaper than a Mustang or Camaro, they were picking the SST because they wanted the extra performance and style.
From Showroom SST to 700-Horsepower Strip Weapon
Straight from the factory, the hottest SST buyers could get was the 390 cubic-inch V8 315 horsepower, genuinely quick for 1969, but nowhere near what it takes to stand a Javelin front wheels in the air on launch. Getting to 700 horsepower and a wheels-up hit means a heavily built engine, a serious suspension and traction package, and a driver who knows exactly how much throttle a car can take before it gets ugly.
The Mechanics Behind a Clean Wheels-Up Launch
Getting a car front end into the air on purpose, and landing it clean, takes more than just raw horsepower.
